The Sherlock Holmes Mysteries

Author: Arthur Conan Doyle

Perfect Bedtime Reading!
If you love to read before you go to bed you will enjoy delving into this book. Arguably the most infamous and recognizable fictional character, Sherlock Holmes shines in this page turning anthology. Narrated through the words of Dr. Watson, he accounts the more adventurous cases of his well-esteemed colleague. Sherlock Holmes transcends these pages and into our consciousness. When reading this you cannot help but admire his amazing deductive reasoning and his flare for solving the most impossible cases. He appears larger than life. Cleverly and meticulously written, Doyle leaves no stone unturned in writing great bedtime stories. Another aspect that I enjoyed about this book is the introduction. Here we learn the beginnings of Doyle's career in writing, his unsuccessful medical practice and the sudden and profound effect that Sherlock Holmes has had on his time. Over a hundred years later time has not made him obsolete. Probably the best aspect of the book is that it only takes an hour to read and you can pick it up later and never miss a beat. I started this book over a year ago and casually read it. I decided to pick it up again and now I couldn't put it down....

Real good reading.
This book is good with select mysteries about the great case-solver of all times. When you read any Holmes case, you must keep in mind that these were the times when technoloy was so much behind what it is now; there was no way to even type fingerprints... only Holmes and his arch rival knew the art! This makes for good reading when you want to a refreshing break. Young kids can also follow the language, in fact I bought this one for my niece but ended up reading it myself... took me back a good 15 years. There's nothing like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle when it comes to Sherlock Holmes. A good buy, worth every cent it costs.

Sherlock Holmes: Sign of the 4
Published in Audio Cassette by Bantam Books-Audio (02 November, 1999)
Author: Arthur Conan, Sir Doyle
Average review score:

Loyalty, Betrayal, Revenge, and Romance
A fabulous treasure dogged by murder. A trans-racial oath of loyalty. A greedy major, a cannibal pigmy, and a peg-legged convict. Mix in a pig-headed police investigator and a brilliant-but-flawed amateur detective, and you have the makings of a first-class mystery.

Miss Mary Morstan, the recipient of yearly gifts of pearls from an anonymous benefactor, receives a summons declaring her a wronged woman and promising riches if she replies. She enlists the aid of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, and finds herself in the middle of a locked-room murder mystery. If the mystery can only be solved, she will become the richest woman in England.

Holmes, in a virtuoso performance, solves the murder, finds the missing treasure, brings the killer to justice, and learns the strange tale of "The Four." Did I mention that Dr. Watson winds up married to Miss Morstan?

The format of this sequel to "A Study in Scarlet" follows basically the same pattern as the original Sherlock Holmes story. Holmes visits the scene of a baffling murder, draws amazing conclusions from his inspection of the scene, and relentlessly tracks down the villian, who then tells his story and turns out to be not such a bad guy after all.

I first read "Scarlet" and "Sign" as a pre-teenager, and they made an indelible impression on me. In my job I frequently visit murder scenes, and I believe that these two books are what have influenced me to perform inspections outside the crimescene tape.

Merrison once again gives an admirable rendition of Holmes, and Michael Williams turns in a creditable Watson. Brian Blessed is a treat as Jonathan Small. The radio play is enhanced by the fact that it gives greater attention to the Morstan-Watson romance than Conan Doyle did in the book. The BBC productions of the Holmes stories always seem to pay more attention to Watson's romances, and it works quite well to make the stories more enjoyable.

Excellent adaptation of the book!
This is a very faithful rendering of this story! Right up on par with the movie starring Jeremy Brett.

Clive Merrison, as usual, gives us a lively interpretation of Holmes, and yet he captures some of his darker passions, too, running more of the spectrum of Holmes' emotional life than many of the actors who have portrayed him onscreen.

Williams gives us a warm Watson - the Everyman we can relate to - and shows us how he was frequently the calm eye in the center of the Holmes hurricane.

The story maturely explores Holmes' drug addiction, his misogyny, and something of his neurotic nature as revealed in the excruciating amount of importance he placed on solving his "little puzzles."

One unexpected gem was Brian Blessed's performance as Jonathan Small. His engaging read added much life to what can be a somewhat tedious part of the story: Jonathan Small's narrative of the history of the crimes being investigated and his revelation of who The Four are.

But best of all, this production gives us access to scenes of the budding romance between Watson and Mary Morstan which in the novel take place "off stage." These scenes are rather touching, actually, and add just the right flavor to counter-balance what is really a horrible little story of greed, murder, and the ease with which humans can be corrupted.

SPITFIRE: FLYING LEGEND
Published in Paperback by Stackpole Books (August, 2000)
Authors: John Dibbs and Tony Holmes
Average review score:

Spitfire, Flying Legend
A companion to "Hurricane, a Fighter Legend" by the same authors (and a succesor to 'Spitfire, a Living Legend' by Jeremy Flack?), but a much bigger book, both in the number of pages and in size. And though I love the Hurricane book, I think they did an even better job on the Spitfire. It doesn't just focus on photographs of surviving planes, but also gives a lot of background material. The only difference between the hardcover and the paperback is the covermaterial - and the price -, so don't be fooled in thinking that more money will buy you a better book, if indeed there could be a better photobook about the Spitfire than this one.

Beautiful photography of restored Spitfires.
This is one of my favorite Spitfire books. It has striking color photography of restored Spitfires in flight. Very current. Very nicely written, it traces the background of surviving aircraft, present ownership etc. It is quite comprehensive. There are a very few flyable Spitfires in the world that are not covered here. Straight From My Heart
Published in Paperback by Universal Expressions, LLC (July, 2002)

straight from his heart to yours
Bill Holmes' metaphors comfort you into visualizing yourself in the midst of your sweetest memory, like in his poem, "Timeless": "The delightful harmony of a songbird's symphony touches my heart in many ways like the caress of a midsummer's breeze grazing against my skin...." His first book of poetry, Straight From My Heart , is an honest, passionate and intellectual offering from one man's heart to yours. This book is a pleasure to read because it offers up the many perceptions of the intelligent, creative and heartfelt Black Man, in America. Holmes' poem "Miracle" is one of upliftment for our children who dream to achieve all that they can. His poem, "The Pleasure is Mine" reveals the emotional, sexual and spiritual connection he has for his woman, "a strong, positive Black woman who works hard." Every page offers up a delicious taste of soul, heart, love for community, God, self and his female counterpart. This book is inspiring!

A "Thimk"ing man's heart!
The short review - You will "feel" this book! Buy it now!

The longer review - I happened to see Bill reading his poetry at a friend of mine's book signing (Angel aka Datgal) at October Gallery. There were quite a few poets reading that night. Bill happened to be sitting right behind me near the back of the audience. I briefly spoke to him and found out that he was also an author like myself. He didn't initially come across as a writer, even though I sensed "something" about him. Bill is just a cool guy in general! So when he got up to read his poems, it was electric! Bill definitely feels deeply, especially for the ladies! He had them talking about him after the performance! It impressed me so much that I set up a book signing/reading for him at a friend's restaurant and bookstore (The Nile in G-town). I wasn't surprised at all when the audience cheered him on! I got him to autograph a copy of his book for me and I read it the next day. It's an intelligent, thought-provoking, and emotional read. Purchase it today!

Unlimited Visibility: Lessons and Processes to Improve Your "I" Sight
Published in Paperback by DeVorss & Company (January, 1997)
Authors: Stephanie Sorensen and Ernest Science of Mind Holmes
Average review score:

Beyond 20/20
Stephanie Sorensen eloquently reminds us that our spiritual journey is a journey within. The entire book is filled with truths that left me saying, "Yes! I understand!" The format was wonderful. She gently guides you through the process of looking within. Each chapter ends with a lesson and meditation to explore your thoughts. Recognizing our personal power and perfection in times of personal crisis can be challenging, but each chapter leaves you feeling more secure in the knowledge that each and every one of us is beloved by our Father. Ms. Sorensen's book has touched my life is such a positive way. My "I" sight is much more clear, beyond 20/20. I can't wait to read her next book! I recommend this book to everyone who is brave enough to look within. You will never regret the journey!

The Real Deal - A Spiritual AHA!
I tend to shy away from "self-help" literature in general, because so often it falls into one of two categories: the overly simplistic, wide-eyed, plastic-smiled "power of positive thinking" genre, touting yet another new way to hypnotize oneself into believing he or she is (select one): attractive, prosperous, successful, etc. The other category would have, for me, more credibility if I could only read it without my eyes tearing up from the dryness. What struck me about Unlimited Visibility from the outset was that it was both based on well-founded, structurally sound principles, and was a pleasure to read as well. I found myself saying aloud "I get it!" and "Of course!"

Rather than introducing us to yet another "Get-Happy-Quick" scheme, Ms. Sorensen shows us how to use the principles we already know. By using everyday examples from real life, she makes that connection between ourselves and the Truth that can seem, at times, so remote and theoretical.

Visualized Flight Maneuvers Handbook for Instructor and Student

Author: H. Holmes
Average review score:

A must for pilots or student pilots !
This book in a very specific and graphic way has every maneuver you can think of to be able to fly in the right and safe way.

Excellent overview of basic flying maneuvers step by step
This book uses visual aids and not verbal discriptions. You can how the actual throttle is pulled out before a descent. The drawings are accurate and use visual cues to help you memorize the information. The book has been around a long time and is still useful today.

Six Great Sherlock Holmes Stories (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (February, 1992)
Author: Arthur Conan, Sir Doyle
Average review score:

Good stories, bad format.
These are some of Doyle's best Holmes stories, but the Dover Thrift Edition is cheap and cheaply made. It provides no notes, no nothing besides the bare bones of the stories. I have liked none of the Dover Thrift series and can barely read them, they are so cheaply made! I made the mistake of buying 20 or so, so my mission is warning the world. Do not buy this edition!

The super sleuth
In detective literature Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with his Sherlock Holmes series is undoubtedly one of the best authors ever. His character Sherlock Holmes has a remarkable power of observation and his deductions from minutest details are plainly stunning. I feel there never is a dull moment in his stories; which are concise to the point. This compilation of six stories is no exception. My favorite from this list is "The Adventure of the Empty House"; in which Holmes busts the remaining group of Prof Moriati's gang. I will not divulge further for fear of giving up the plot.

Well worth the price!
For less then the price of a cup of coffee, you can own a copy of what I consider to be Sir A Conan Doyle's best Sherlock Holmes stories.

This book contains 6 stores. A Scandal in Bohemia. In this story you see Holmes pitted against a female that may just be his equal.

Next is The Red Headed League. This is the weak story in this collection. Still worth a read, but not a very thoughtful one.

Next is The Adventure of the Speckled Band. Holmes and Watson visit the countryside to examine a death most foul.

The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb is a short tale of a young mans missing digit.

Next is the final problem and closes with The adventure in the Empty house. I will give no plot away on these since they are my favourite Holmes stories.

Overall for under a buck, a GREAT value!
